Algorithms increasingly become part of government policy, ranging from social security, education and healthcare to policing. This digitalization poses great opportunities, such as efficiency gains but also comes with threats to liberal values such as equality of opportunity, freedom and autonomy, and rule of law. In order for digitalization to benefit individuals and societies, European liberals need to make sure the use of algorithms is in line with liberal values. In this essay, Laura de Vries, researcher at the Van Mierlo Foundation discusses the application of algorithms in local governance and its implications for liberal values.
