About D66

D66 (Democrats 66) is an internationally minded, social liberal party in the Netherlands. We stand for strong education, equal opportunities and progressive politics. In Leiden, D66 works for an open and inclusive city where students, internationals and long time residents can build their future together. Nationally, D66 has been shaping Dutch politics since 1966, with a clear focus on democracy, education and international cooperation.

What is D66 in Leiden?

D66 Leiden is the local branch of Democrats 66. We are active in local politics and in the city itself. In the Leiden municipal council, which consists of 39 seats, D66 is represented by councillors who work every day on progressive and inclusive policies for all residents.

What are municipal elections?

Municipal elections decide who represents you in the Leiden municipal council. The 39 councillors make decisions that affect daily life in the city. From housing and education to mobility, sustainability and quality of life. By voting, you choose which parties and people shape the future of Leiden.

Can I vote for the municipal council as an international?

You can vote in the Leiden municipal elections if you:

  • are an EU citizen and registered as a resident in Leiden; or
  • are a non EU citizen who has lived in the Netherlands for at least five continuous years and is registered as a resident in Leiden.
