Wapenembargo Venezuela niet genoeg

European Ministers of Foreign Affairs today decided to impose an arms embargo against Venezuela. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) welcomes the measures but believes the EU should go further and also impose targeted sanctions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and members of his regime. Schaake already called on High Representative Mogherini to impose such sanctions at the beginning of August. Schaake: "Since the controversial installation of the undemocratic constitutional assembly Maduro has further consolidated his authoritarian grip on power. Political opponents are rounded up, demonstrations are violently suppressed and there is a severe shortage of food and medical supplies. The arms embargo imposed today at least ensures that European weapons and other means such as water cannons, can no longer be used against the Venezuelan population. It however remains inconceivable that the EU is still hesitating about actually imposing sanctions against Maduro.”
