Op een vijftiental Nederlandse gemeenten na is de bibliotheek momenteel vrijwel overal op zondag gesloten. Dat geldt ook voor Vught. D66 lijsttrekker Wilbert Seuren: \u201cDe overheid moet de toegang tot kennis zo laagdrempelig mogelijk maken. Juist op zondag hebben mensen de tijd om te lezen, boeken te lenen en in te leveren. Er is geen enkele reden waarom mensen op zondag voor een dichte deur zouden moeten staan.\u201d\n<b>Taalachterstand<\/b>Bij vijftien procent van de Nederlandse scholieren, is de taalontwikkeling onder de maat. D66 denkt dat de verruiming van de openingstijden van bibliotheken dit kan veranderen. Seuren: \u201cDe beste manier om taal te ontwikkelen is door er veel mee om te gaan. Lezen draagt bij aan het taalgevoel van jongeren, en hier hebben ze hun hele leven profijt van. De \u00e9\u00e9n leest graag over geschiedenis, de andere liever een roman. In de bibliotheek kan iedereen iets vinden dat bij hem past.\u201d\n<b>Meer dan lezen<\/b>Bibliotheken zelf zien hun rol de laatste jaren sterk toenemen. Als centrum van cultuur, als centrum ter bevordering leesvaardigheid en als ontmoetingsplaats. Ook is de bibliotheek de plaats waar iedereen toegang heeft tot het internet, en ouderen ondersteund kunnen worden bij het gebruik van de nieuwe digitale mogelijkheden.\n<b>Levendigheid<\/b>Bijkomend voordeel van een zondagsopenstelling van de bibliotheek is dat het de levendigheid van het centrum ten goede zal komen. Eerder pleitte D66 al voor het openstellen van Albert Heijn op zondag.
