Toch verdient het nog steeds, of juist nu, een bespreking in deze Idee over ethiek en gezondheid.<\/strong>\n\nDoor Annelou van Egmond<\/strong>\n\nOm maar meteen met de deur in huis te vallen: de uitkomst van de strijd tussen zelfbeschikking van vrouwen en patriarchale tradities is volgens Goldberg bepalend voor de toekomst van de wereld. Reproductive freedom is not just a matter of justice, it\u2019s a matter of survival <\/em>Er staat dus wel iets op het spel.\n\nGoldbergs pleidooi voor onderwijs, zeggenschap en de vrijheid om zelf te beschikken over hun lichaam voor vrouwen behoeft in de ogen van velen van u wellicht niet eens onderbouwing. Toch doet zij dat en in een aantal gevallen levert dat hartverscheurende of juist hilarische beschrijvingen op. Ik beveel het verhaal aan over de wijze waarop de autoriteiten in Singapore, teneinde de geboortepercentages omhoog te krijgen, in een folder de voordelen van sex op de achterbank van een auto uiteenzetten.\nGoldberg illustreert en bewijst haar punt met verhalen over vrouwen overal ter wereld, in ontwikkelingslanden maar zeker ook in \u2018ontwikkelde\u2019 landen. Zij beschrijft ook het werk van grondleggers van de strijd voor vrouwenrechten en hun tegenstanders. Zij besteedt aandacht aan belangrijke piketpalen, zoals Roe versus Wade (noot auteur: uitspraak van de Supreme Court in de VS in 1973 dat het recht van de vrouw op privacy, zoals beschreven in het 14e amendement, ook het recht op een abortus beschermd, onverlet de verantwoordelijkheid van de staat om ongeboren leven te beschermen alsmede de gezondheid van de vrouw) en de door Reagan ingestelde en door George Bush hernieuwde Gag-rule die NGO\u2019s verbiedt om bij ontwikkelingsprojecten ook maar \u00e9\u00e9n publieke dollar te besteden aan family planning<\/em>. Deze regel is onlangs door Obama teruggedraaid. Aardig is ook de sequentie van VN conferenties in New Mexico, Cairo en Beijing waar wereldwijde veenbrand van reactionaire krachten steeds zijn slag probeerde te slaan (lees in dit verband ook het artikel van Sophie In \u2019t Veld over het Vaticaan en de EU eerder in dit nummer).\n\nWat The Means of Reproduction<\/em> interessant maakt is dat Michelle Goldberg met haar schier eindeloze notities over de wijze waarop vrouwen vrijwel overal ter wereld beperkt worden in hun beslissingsruimte over eigen lijf, en intellectuele en economische ontwikkeling wel de patronen schetst maar niet concludeert dat er sprake is van een mondiaal complot of samenspanning. Dit was juist de valkuil waar eerdere feministen inliepen en die aanleiding gaf tot veel boosheid en strijd. Goldberg toont juist aan dat de wijze waarop mannen door de jaren heen en overal op de aardbol vrouwen in hun rechten beperken voor die mannen individueel en in hun gemeenschap de \u2018beste\u2019 manier is om de status quo in stand te houden. Zij toont ook aan dat dit patroon een bedreiging is voor de ontwikkeling van de wereld.\n\nWaar in veel beschouwingen over wat er mis is in de wereld vraagstukken als oorlog en vrede, armoede en economische ontwikkeling de boventoon voeren en mensenrechten, laat staan vrouwenrechten, pas daarna komen, stelt Goldberg dat de prioriteiten bijna andersom moeten liggen. Zij ziet vrouwen en hun lichaam als het slagveld:\u2018All over the planet, conflicts between tradition and modernity are being fought on the terrain of women\u2019s bodies. <\/em>Globalization is challenging traditional social arrangements. It is upsetting economic stability, bringing women into the workforce, and beaming images of Western individualism into the remotest villages while drawing more and more people into ever growing cities. All this spurs conservative backlashes, as right-wingers promise anxious, disoriented people that the chaos can be contained if only the old sexual order is enforced. Yet the subjugation of women is just making things worse, creating all manner of demographic, economic and public health problems\u2019.<\/em>\n\nZolang conservatieven de onderdrukking van (hun) vrouwen zien als een onmisbare basis voor de eigen nationale of religieuze identiteit zullen problemen van overbevolking, onderbevolking, onevenwichtige verhouding tussen aantallen mannen en vrouwen, armoede en de verspreiding van HIV\/AIDS niet opgelost worden. Dat het onrechtvaardig is om vrouwen minder rechten toe te staan dan mannen is een evidentie die aan het boek van Michelle Goldberg ten grondslag ligt, maar het is niet deze onrechtvaardigheid die ze wil bestrijden. Ze wil \u2018gewoon\u2019 een betere wereld met minder oorlog en meer welvaart voor iedereen. \u2018We know how to radically improve women\u2019s lives around the world; give them education, power and the liberty to control their own bodies.
