De raad besloot donderdag om deze parkeergarage door de gemeente te laten ontwikkelen. D66-raadslid Maarten Koning: \u201cDe Jaarbeurspleingarage is nodig om het stationsgebied in de toekomst aantrekkelijk te houden. Het is\u00a0de meest duurzame oplossing voor het parkeervraagstuk ter plekke: dubbel- en zelfs driedubbelgebruik van parkeerplaatsen wordt mogelijk. de gemeenteraad een second opinion te laten uitvoeren op het collegevoorstel om een krediet van ruim 49 miljoen euro beschikbaar te stellen voor de ontwikkeling van de garage. Marktpartijen wilden de ontwikkeling zelf niet ter hand nemen. De raad wilde daarom eerst overtuigd worden van het nut en de noodzaak om deze garage te bouwen. Koning: \u201cUit de second opinion blijkt nu duidelijk dat nut en noodzaak van deze garage bewezen zijn. Door te investeren in ondergrondse parkeerruimte, stralen we vertrouwen uit in de duurzame toekomst van het Stationsgebied. Al in 2003 werd ingestemd met het voornemen om onder het Jaarbeursplein een parkeergarage te bouwen, om zo te voorzien in de parkeerbehoefte in het gebied. Die parkeercapaciteit is nodig omdat er nog een aantal grote gebouwen zal verrijzen, waar mensen zullen wonen, werken en uitgaan. Het originele plan voorzag in duizend plekken. Door dubbelgebruik kan effici\u00ebnter worden omgegaan met de parkeerplaatsen en is nu voorzien in 761 plekken. Koning: \u201cAl ruim tien jaar wordt er gewerkt aan plannen voor een duurzaam en toekomstbestendig stationsgebied. Hier staan straks prachtige kantoor- en woongebouwen, hotels en uitgaansgelegenheden.
