De Leidse gemeenteraad stemde in met het initiatief van D66 dat daartoe opriep. Raadslid Sander van Diepen: \u201cVoor de toekomst van onze regio kunnen we niet anders dan gezamenlijk optrekken. Dit gebeurt echter nog niet op alle onderwerpen. De Leidse regio staat voor grote gezamenlijke uitdagingen en opgaven. Op het gebied van verstedelijking, woningbouw, economie, verduurzaming en energievoorziening. Hechte ambtelijke en inhoudelijke samenwerking kan de ontwikkeling van de gehele regio stimuleren. Het Platform Bestuurlijke Eenheid Leidse Regio onder leiding van Emeritus Hoogleraar Ton van Raan zet zich in om het belang van een gemeentelijke fusie onder de aandacht te brengen.
