het Europees Parlement verdedigen. Volgens haar ligt er vanuit het Parlement een sterk mandaat om een forse Europese hervorming door te voeren. \u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Vanwege de wetgeving zouden landen hun anti-corruptiemaatregelen opnieuw tegen het licht moeten houden. Naast minimumstraffen komen er ook meer maatregelen om corruptie te voorkomen en krijgen organisaties die zich bezighouden met anti-corruptie een sterkere basis. Ook wordt belemmering van de rechtsgang in heel Europa verboden. \u201cCorrupte overheidsfunctionarissen kunnen beter hun biezen pakken. Het Parlement wil stevige maatregelen en minimumstraffen voor corruptie in alle Europese lidstaten. Onacceptabel hoog en wat Raquel Garcia Hermida-van der Walle betreft niet meer houdbaar: \u201cCorruptie is een regelrechte bedreiging voor onze rechtsstaat. Het ontneemt mensen gelijke kansen en breekt onze democratie af. Onze samenlevingen lijden honderden miljarden aan schade en het ru\u00efneert mensenlevens. Grootscheepse hervormingen zijn nodig om de hedendaagse corruptie het hoofd te bieden.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Burgemeesters en regionale bestuurders waarschuwen dat ook Nederland de corruptie te lijf moet gaan. \u201cOndermijning is een groot probleem. Denk aan drugsbendes die proberen de macht te corrumperen, van gemeenteraden tot rechters. Dit besluit wordt gesteund door een meerderheid van haar mede-onderhandelaars van de andere Europese politieke fracties. De onderhandelingen beginnen daarom in januari, wanneer Polen het voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie overneemt. De nieuwe regering in Polen heeft van anti-corruptie een topprioriteit gemaakt.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>Uit het Europese rechtsstaatrapport blijkt dat corruptie een serieus probleem vormt voor de Hongaarse rechtsstaat. Garc\u00eda Hermida-van der Walle noemt het \u2018absurd\u2019 om met het meest corrupte land van de Europese Unie te onderhandelen over corruptie. Hongarije is het slechtstgenoteerde EU-land in de corruptie-index van Transparency International. Garc\u00eda Hermida-van der Walle: \u201cEr is corrupt, corrupter en dan is er het regime van de Hongaarse minister-president Viktor Orb\u00e1n. Schaamteloze voorbeelden van diens corruptie zijn door het hele land te vinden. Van lachwekkende hobbyprojecten met Europees geld tot de treurige staat van Hongaarse ziekenhuizen.
