De lidstaten verbinden zich de facto niet meer aan het verminderen van de broeikasgassen met 90% in 2040. Die doelstelling had volgens wetenschappers de ingrijpende gevolgen van klimaatverandering binnen de perken kunnen houden. Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy reageert namens Renew Europe en D66: <em>&#8220;Het noemen van 90% in de Raadsconclusies is niets meer dan een vijgenblad. Van dat doel mag namelijk 5 tot 10% worden afgekocht buiten Europa. De facto dus 80%. De hele trukendoos wordt opengetrokken, van flexibele definities tot herzieningsclausules en mogelijke aanpassingen in de toekomst. Dat betekent meer onzekerheid en bureaucratie en daar wilden we juist vanaf. De extreemrechtse regeringen die deze verzwakkingen hebben ge\u00ebist, brengen ons concurrentievermogen hiermee ernstig in gevaar.&#8221; \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\t<\/p>\t  <\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n block-paragraph__paragraph\"\n\t\t\t>\n\t\tGerbrandy benadrukt dat Europa vooral zichzelf heeft met deze onkunde:<em>\u201cIk wil dat Europa investeringen aantrekt met voorspelbaarheid en deugdelijke regels. Alleen een strak pad naar nul uitstoot in 2050 levert dat. De belofte dat we onze doelen gaan halen komt met deze wanprestatie op losse schroeven. Terwijl de nieuwe economie in de startblokken staat, zitten we vast in de houdgreep van gevestigde belangen. Maar het is duidelijk dat die geen verantwoordelijkheid kunnen nemen namens de 450 miljoen Europese burgers. Het is nu aan ons om die stap te zetten.
